Project Goals

The automotive industry keeps changing. New technologies, a wider range of vehicles, and numerous variants with smaller quantities require a high planning effort, especially if different, non-networked systems are used. The goal was to develop an application that covers the core process of assembly planning with a future-oriented, service-friendly, and web-based technology. Indispensable components included the integration of heterogeneous data sources and the coverage of the application's entire deployment process in the Audi AWS Cloud, as well as the presentation of large data volumes in a clear 2D layout.

Challenges

  • Coverage of a complex planning process with many iterations.
  • Production and factory planners with different responsibilities work in parallel and need to communicate information and share work results.
  • Data and information come from different systems and sources.
  • Coverage of assembly lines at different locations.

Solution

The interdisciplinary project team consisting of planners, usability specialists, UI designers, developers, and testers initially recorded in detail all processes and systems used during assembly planning. Then the solution was outlined, which integrates previously unconnected systems and data into an easy-to-use application.

An agile project management program using SCRUM methodology enabled continuous delivery of functions at regular time intervals. The participation of the end users in the development and application of the User-Centered Design principles made it possible to deliver functions that exactly met the customer's requirements. This significantly contributed to the positive user acceptance.

SABO Mobile IT has developed an application with a future-proof user interface that allows to quickly and intuitively display all information relevant to the planning process.

Technology

  • Use of modern tools for web development (TypeScript, React and MobX).
  • .NET Core business logic server, REST-API interface, and MySQL Aurora database.
  • Docker container and Cloud Foundry environment installed in the virtual AWS VPC Cloud (Amazon Web Services Private Cloud) with DB S3 and Cloud Watch.

received several awards:

German Innovation Award
DPA - Red Dot
DPA - iF 2019
DPA German Design Award

Result

The dpa centralizes large amounts of data from different systems and sources. Thanks to the competence and experience of the planner community, planning processes and their documentation could be unified. Efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity of the planning process are increased, while complexity is minimized. The effect: enormous time savings and cost reductions through sustainable, detailed, transparent, and comparative planning. SABO Mobile IT developed the dpa - trend-setting technology and a valuable contribution to the creation of a sustainable working environment at Audi. Intelligent planning becomes reality.

  • All information relevant for assembly planners is immediately available - regardless of the device and location.

  • The creation of any number of plan variants helps to quickly simulate the effects of planning on production.

  • The application clearly displays the layout of the production hall with all objects and spatial restrictions in 2D layout.

  • Important layout information is graphically highlighted to ensure quick orientation and concentration on key elements.

  • Display of the current status of the workstations and the entire production cycle.

  • Control of the production processes and utilization of the employees.

  • Significantly easier planning of new or modified work processes and components in relation to the space available on the line.

  • Active user guidance for entering all information required for production, such as required tools, part positioning, required production time, etc.

  • Work processes, material, and resources can be moved very easily and intuitively between workstations.

  • The defined workflow ensures complete processing of all planning tasks and correctness of the processing of individual requirements by means of clearly arranged checklists.

  • The user interface designed by our partner CaderaDesign ensures maximum readability, clarity, and comprehensibility despite large amounts of highly complex information.

  • Data can be used by other applications via API interfaces.

  • A concept for extending the system to include the planning of logistics processes, including just-in-time delivery to the assembly line, is already available.
